After a long time since I last wrote a blog post of even created a piece of art, it feels quite exciting coming back to continue my posts. Lockdown has been a very strange time for everyone and yet it has been extremely busy for myself as a key worker whose been working non-stop.
I have taken some time away from work and the craziness it comes with to spend time with my brother who lives alone. After much walking, eating and bingeing Grey’s Anatomy we decided to play around with paint and canvas for wall hangings in my brothers new home. I haven’t really used painting in my art practice and have what I would consider as a basic understanding and knowledge of abstract art. Google has proved to be a great place for some light inspiration. Dom wanted to try the spinning technique where you use an electric drill to spin the canvas with paint on to create a bleeding effect on the canvas. I wanted to create something more traditional with brushes. I decided not to wet brushes so I had the dry brush effect on the canvas to create blurring and texture. I did not plan the design for this piece beforehand but I did decide the colours I would use. Dom wanted colours to complement those in his sitting room so I went for primary colours. I found starting the piece quite nerve-wracking because I don’t have a lot of confidence with painting and blending colours but once I started to my nerves eased and I really wanted to enjoy it. The horizontal and vertical brush strokes with the rough edges was not planned but as I worked on the piece I planned where to put them as I reference the positions of the other strokes.

I really enjoyed this piece. It was great to get back into the art and I feel it has started something for me. Lockdown has created a lot of free time and I want to continue creating art. I believe this piece could try into an ongoing project. Lets see where this takes me!
